The honest comparison

Popular wallets. Different trade‑offs.

Trust Wallet, MetaMask, Phantom and Exodus are capable products built for different jobs. This page compares the jobs — not the marketing — and states plainly what Tor Wallets gives up to protect the network path.

Self-custody across the category Privacy is the difference Policies change; verify current terms

The common problems

What people actually struggle with.

These are recurring, publicly documented support themes — not claims about every user or every version. Each wallet has different settings and policies; check the current official documentation.

Trust Wallet

Self-custody mobile wallet

Common friction

Balances can look missing when an RPC, indexer or token network is out of sync. Wrong-network sends and fake “support” accounts are recurring themes.

Where Tor Wallets differs

Explicit network and standard labels, automatic RPC failover, Tor-only requests, and in-app support that never asks for a seed phrase.

MetaMask

Browser-first dApp wallet

Common friction

Pending transactions, custom RPC and network confusion, and signature phishing are recurring topics. A dApp-heavy workflow expands the number of sites that can ask you to sign.

Where Tor Wallets differs

No injected provider and no dApp browser. Every send is a native quote, a master-password approval and a local signature — not a blind request from a website.

Phantom

Consumer Solana wallet

Common friction

Fake update prompts and seed-phrase phishing are documented attack patterns. The wallet is deeply integrated with Solana dApps and browser surfaces.

Where Tor Wallets differs

No browser extension or dApp surface to phish. One signed APK from one domain, one in-app support channel, and no request for secrets — ever.

Exodus

Desktop and mobile portfolio

Common friction

Sync and loading issues, missing tokens after restore, and phishing emails are documented. A desktop/mobile ecosystem adds more places for state and identity to spread.

Where Tor Wallets differs

No cloud sync and no desktop companion to keep in step. One Android client, one sealed vault, automatic RPC fallback and Tor-only traffic.

Side by side

The categories that matter.

A comparison of common product categories. “Varies” means the answer depends on platform, version or settings; it is not a claim about every configuration.

The trade-off

What you give up.
What you keep.

A smaller feature list is not a missing feature list. It is a deliberate reduction of the surface an attacker or a data business can use.

You give up

Convenience features

  • No built-in swaps, bridges or staking.
  • No dApp browser or injected provider.
  • No fiat on-ramp, NFT gallery or portfolio sync.
  • No email support desk or cloud backup.
  • Tor can be slower on the first connection.
You keep

Control of the path

  • Tor-only networking with no clearnet fallback.
  • Keys generated and sealed on your phone.
  • Nine networks and 62 built-in assets.
  • Up to 20 separate wallets in one vault.
  • In-app support that never asks for secrets.
  • A signed APK and a published SHA-256.

The business model

Free core.
No data business.

Tor Wallets is funded by donations today. Optional Pro tools and transparent routing fees are planned for later. We do not sell data, run ads, hold funds or issue a token.

If a feature would weaken privacy, we do not ship it.

That rule is the product brief. It is also why the wallet has fewer features than a portfolio app, an exchange or a dApp browser.
